The Public Service Obama-Chesky Scholarship

Like the scholarship's founders, we need young individuals from all across this nation who are curious about the world and firmly believe that they should work to bring about constructive change in it. Students should have a strong sense of altruism, serve in the community or develop one, and have a broad perspective on the potential benefits of public service.

About the Voyager Scholarship

Young leaders who can cross barriers and work together to tackle the world's most pressing problems are needed in an increasingly globalized society.

In order to assist in developing such leaders, the Obamas and Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky established the Voyager Scholarship. Despite their disparate upbringings, the President and Brian share the belief that seeing new things and places fosters empathy, understanding, and collaboration, all of which prepare the next generation to effect significant change.

Students who are US citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients and who are beginning their junior year of college at a recognized four-year college or university are eligible for the Voyager Scholarship.

This scholarship provides college students with meaningful travel experiences to broaden their horizons, financial aid to lessen the burden of student loan debt, and a network of leaders and mentors to assist them, such as:

$50,000 in financial assistance

Under "last dollar" financial aid, students will earn up to $25,000 annually for their junior and senior years of college. In order for students to pursue a career in public service, this financial aid should help to reduce the burden of college debt.

Summer Journey

In order to pursue a summer work-travel adventure between their junior and senior year of college, students will receive a $10,000 stipend and free Airbnb housing. The students will create their own Summer Voyage in order to experience a selected field and be exposed to various cultures.

Fall Summit

Every autumn, students will be invited to an annual summit to assist in defining and motivating their journey toward public service.

The Leaders' Network

As part of the program, students will have access to a network of leaders through ongoing speaker series invitations. They will be introduced to new service opportunities and advancements in their professions through this network of leaders. Following graduation, students will become a part of the global community of the Obama Foundation, which will make resources and activities available to them.
