Scholars Warn Tinubu Against Taking Military Action Against Niger
The Council of Nigerian Teachers has warned the President of Nigeria and the President of ECOWAS, Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the attempt to take military action against the Republic of Niger, following the overthrow of the civilian government by the military.
The scholars said that the decision will not lead to good results for both countries.
The teachers asked each party to take a peaceful step in a diplomatic manner to support the Republic of Niger and its people.
This is coming after a meeting held by the organization, where its president Aminu Inuwa Muhammad, and its secretary Engineer Basheer Adamu Aliyu that they reached on Friday.
They hoped that the Nigerian Parliament would not allow them to enter into this dispute which could turn into a war.
Also, the teachers have attracted the attention of the teachers at all levels to focus on educating and drawing attention to the effects of fighting between neighbors and ensuring the sustainability of the relationship between Nigeria and Niger.
"It is good for the Nigerian government to review the efforts it is making, and also for security threats from wherever they are, who are destroying the country's beauty, so that we are not attacked in a crisis that we can avoid, just to please other countries of the world politically."
The scholars who signed the document during the meeting numbered 25 from different parts of the country, where they hoped that the apparent threat would not lead to peace between Nigeria and Niger.
The forum emphasized the support of the diplomatic measures that have been taken by sending representatives to sit with the leaders of the military coup in Niger for a peaceful discussion.
"The coup d'état in the Republic of Niger and all those in the other countries of the SAHEL region is unfortunate, and it deserves to be condemned by all those who believe in democracy and all those who seek peace in the world.
Even though many people prefer democracy and its plans, but the way to provide good governance is something that distinguishes the people of each country. Therefore, it is the right of the people of the Republic of Niger to follow all the ways they see fit to restore democracy in their country, if they see fit; and any effort that someone will make, wherever they are, as long as it is not the people of Niger, is something that will stand up for democracy in the name of creating democracy."
The scholars said that the seven-day deadline given by ECOWAS to the country's military leaders is contrary to the provisions of democracy and is an interference with the right to run an independent country.
The statement said, the majority of the Nigerian people do not support the war in Niger which has a good relationship.
"What is more dangerous than this, participating in this war will cause our region to be turned into a poison test champion that will be used to play tricks and test weapons, from foreign countries that have bad intentions for this region.
"And the use of military force will lead to excesses regarding the main work of ECOWAS to provide security and protection from foreign countries, it will give the opportunity to others to make us fight each other."
