 The Federal Government has closed the borders of Nigeria and Niger

The federal government has ordered the closure of all the borders of the country with the Republic of Niger as a matter of urgency due to the political crisis in the country.

According to the Acting Comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi Adewale, the purpose of the order will benefit both countries.

Adewale, who was at the Jibia border in Katsina state, to monitor the steps being taken, said that the federal government has ordered stakeholders in border affairs to ensure compliance with the directive.

"As we know, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu is a fighter for economic integration in West Africa. He believes that trade with our neighbor can bring progress to Nigerians and other people in the region," he said.

"Perhaps this action helped him to succeed as ECOWAS president within a month of his ascension to the presidency of Nigeria.

“Now, we have a situation on our hands where there is instability and insecurity. This situation will not allow the development of trade. We cannot have meaningful business in the situation of insecurity and instability that is happening in the Republic of Niger.

"That is why the ECOWAS group, through the authority of its president, has taken action to close all the borders of the country with the Republic of Niger."

According to him, the agency has sent officers to the borders of Nigeria and Niger to ensure security.

"It is the responsibility of the Nigerian Customs Service, working together with other government agencies, to do the right thing.

"The Nigerian Customs Service has collaborated with other border security agencies to enforce the border closure law."
