The new American ambassador has arrived in Niger
The new US ambassador to Niger, Kathleen Fitzgibbons, arrived in Yamai this Saturday but will not present her documents "due to the current political situation," according to the US State Department.
The arrival of Fitzgibbons "doesn't change our position, it is only necessary to have a senior official at our embassy at this difficult time," as embassy spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.
The United States continues to seek diplomatic solutions to resolve the political crisis that has erupted since the military overthrew the government of Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 and detained him.
The statement added: "Fitzgibbons' focus will be on finding a peaceful solution to the conflict and the immediate release of Bazoum and his family, as well as those who have been illegally detained."
