The Taliban has prevented Afghan women from going abroad to study at university
"After the Taliban banned women from going to universities, my only wish was to get a scholarship that would allow me to go abroad to study," said a 20-year-old Afghan student.
The student, whose name we have changed to Natkai for her safety, said that she continued to study even though her chances of studying at university in the country are very small.
The Taliban have joined forces against women who oppose the measures they are developing.
The student then received a scholarship to study at the University of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates from the country's richest businessman, Sheikh Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor.
The scholarship program was announced in December 2022 after the Taliban banned women from going to university.
The BBC understands that a total of 100 Afghan women have successfully received such scholarships. Some Afghan students living abroad have already started traveling to Dubai.
On Wednesday, July 23, Natakai said goodbye to her parents and headed to the airport.
But soon her dream faded.
"When the Taliban officials saw our travel tickets and visas, they said that women were not allowed to leave Afghanistan with study visas," she said in a whisper.
