Zimbabwean police have arrested 40 members of the opposition party
The police in Zimbabwe have arrested some 40 members of the CCC opposition party during a campaign campaign they are conducting, a week before the upcoming general election.
They were detained in the Glenview neighborhood of Harare, the capital, on Tuesday.
The spokesperson of the party, Fadzayi Mahere, said Gladmore Hakata, the candidate for the House of Representatives for Glen view South, was among those arrested.
The statement released by the police on social media said that the CCC party did some things that it did not mention in the announcement of the rally that it sent to the police before conducting it.
They held motorcades, blocked traffic and chanted party slogans on the streets, prompting the police to respond after a resident reported the incident, the police said.
Last month, the country's opposition called on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to take action against the use of the police to suppress their meetings.
The CCC said that the police had banned many of its meetings since July 9.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa and CCC leader Nelson Chamisa are the leading candidates in the election.
