We have evidence that the Federal Government is in secret negotiations with the bandits - David
The governor of Zamfara, Dauda Lawal has stated that his government has enough information to confirm that there are some Federal Government officials who are leading secret talks with bandits in the state.
The governor said this in a response to the Federal Government, today Tuesday, after a statement issued by the government on Monday challenging the governor on his allegation that the Federal Government is negotiating with bandits in the state.
The statement that came from the Minister of Information and Public Awareness of Nigeria, accused the governor of Zamfara of putting politics in the security industry.
However, in his response through his adviser on media, Bala Idris, the governor of Zamfara said "we have authentic information and witnesses about what happened between the representatives of the federal government and the bandits during the series of negotiations which was done in different places in Zamfara state."
But the statement said that the Zamfara government does not intend to reveal the names of the representatives of the Federal Government who held the talks in the media out of respect for the authorities and the rule of law.
The state government also criticized the conscience of the Minister of Information and Broadcasting of Nigeria for his response on Monday, saying that he did so without doing the proper investigation.
The Zamfara government said that the talks it spoke about were held in the areas of Birnin Magji, Maradun, Mun Haye, Ajah, Bawo and Bagege.
In response on Tuesday, the Zamfara government said, "Talking to the bandits is a big mistake that it will not want to commit, and it will not end the problem, moreover, it will strengthen the bandits."
On Monday, the Federal Government said in a statement that "No Federal Government official is negotiating with any bandit or group of bandits."
"However, the government is ready to use any means to ease the current situation of violence and restore peace in the areas that have been attacked by bandits."
Zamfara is at the forefront of the north-western states of Nigeria where the problem of insecurity caused by bandits continues to harm them.
Even last week, wild men attacked the student dormitories of the Federal University in Gusau, where they abducted many students, some of whom are still in the hands of the bandits.
