South Africans who are fighting in Israel will be arrested - minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Africa, Naledi Pandor, said that her countrymen who are fighting in the Gaza Strip will be arrested with the Israeli Defense Forces when they return to the country, the AP news agency said.

"I have already issued a warning to the South Africans who are fighting... we are ready. If you come home, we will arrest you", she said during a rally in support of the Palestinians earlier this week.

It is not clear how many people this may affect.

South Africa has already warned last year that its citizens may face punishment if they fight with the Israeli army.

The Haaretz newspaper last Wednesday quoted the army's statement as saying, "The Israeli army is trying to provide security and fulfill all the rules that should be fulfilled when the soldiers go to foreign countries.

The Israeli security forces are monitoring the situation regularly, in cooperation with the relevant government agencies."

South Africa is at the forefront of the criticism of Israel's war in Gaza, which resulted in the killing of more than 1,200 people and the kidnapping of more than 200 others in October.

The country filed a case in the international court to see if Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.
