Satellite images obtained by the BBC show Russia has sold North Korea one million barrels of crude oil since March.
The move comes as North Korea is sending weapons and troops to Russia in its war in Ukraine.
Researchers have been tracking North Korean oil tankers for eight months in the area where Russian oil fields are located in the west of the country.

Researchers from the UK-based Open Source Institute say the tankers have made more than 40 trips.
